Why Car Batteries Fail In Winter, And How To Spot It Coming

Cold mornings do not kill healthy batteries. They expose the ones that were already on the way out. Here is what to watch for before you are the one waiting for a jump start.

Flat batteries are far and away the most common call we take, and they cluster on the first genuinely cold mornings of the year. There is a reason for that, and it is not simply that cold kills batteries.

What cold actually does

Two things happen at once. The chemical reaction inside a lead-acid battery slows as temperature drops, so it can deliver less current — around freezing, a battery might have 60 per cent of its warm-weather cranking power. At the same time, cold engine oil is thicker, so the starter motor needs considerably more current to turn the engine.

The battery has less to give at precisely the moment the car asks for more. A healthy battery copes with this easily. One that has been quietly declining all summer does not.

The warning signs

  • Slow cranking. The engine turns over more lazily than it used to, particularly first thing. This is the clearest sign there is.
  • Dimming lights at idle. Headlights that brighten noticeably when you rev suggest the battery is not holding its own.
  • Start-stop stops working. Modern cars disable the stop-start function when the battery cannot support it. Most drivers read this as a fault; it is an early warning.
  • Struggling after the car has stood. Fine on a daily commute, difficult after two days parked? The battery is not holding charge.
  • Age. Most car batteries last four to five years. Past five, you are on borrowed time.

The short journey problem

Starting an engine uses a large slug of charge, which the alternator then replaces as you drive. A twenty-minute run at reasonable speed replaces it comfortably. A five-minute trip to the shops does not — especially with headlights, heated screen, wipers and heater all drawing power at once.

String enough short winter journeys together and the battery never returns to full charge. It sits partly discharged for weeks, which causes sulphation on the plates and permanently reduces its capacity. This is what quietly kills most batteries. The cold morning merely reveals it.

What actually helps

Take one longer drive a week if your normal use is short hops. If the car sits for long periods, a smart trickle charger left connected is the single best thing you can do — they cost less than a callout and add years to a battery's life. Switch the heated rear screen off once it has cleared rather than leaving it running, and turn accessories off before you switch the engine off so the next start is not fighting them.

And if you have already needed one jump start this year, treat it as a warning rather than a fix. A battery that has been deeply discharged rarely recovers fully.

When it is not the battery

If a battery goes flat repeatedly despite decent journeys, the problem is usually elsewhere: an alternator that is not charging properly, or a parasitic drain from something that stays awake after you lock the car. Aftermarket alarms, hard-wired dashcams and faulty door switches are the frequent culprits. Replacing the battery in that situation just buys you a few weeks and a second bill.
